Design of Experiments [DOE]
Design of Experiments is an efficient quality improvement tool and an important part of the Improve phase in the Six Sigma DMAIC process. It helps in the careful implementation of newly designed ventures. This new kind of approach called the Design of Experiments is often contrasted to the old OFAT or one factor at a time approach. In this approach more than one factor is taken into consideration because it saves a lot of time and money.
Dr. Genichi Taguchi, a Japanese engineer, developed some statistical methods by stressing on reducing variation and then accomplishing target values. The benefit of using the statistical approach instead of the OLAP approach is that it helps save a lot of costs. It does this by substituting a single value for several values. Moreover, the results in this approach are expressed numerically. So, it is easy to detect errors and improve upon them.
Design of Experiments (DOE)
” Design of Experiments ” is effective tool with an objectivity of minimize wastage by reducing cost and increase process yields by reducing variation in the entire process. It is successfully implemented in multiple domains and industries like automobile, software development and engineering.
Design of Experiments is also a quality improvement methodology that is used for investigating and identifying end to end process. Under ” Design of Experiments” TQM professional analyze the data which is the outcome of an experiment. Base upon collected data entire process is performed. Its also an important task to authenticate the data which is used in to Design of Experiments.
Lets see the example of DOE:
In website development services we use to have two domains, designing and coding. We can segregate the working hours of designers involved and working hours of coding involved in the project. We can derive per hour execution skill from both and base upon that we can measure area of designer work and coding work and prpare matrix where we can get website estimation more fast while client ask. This process of analyzing data and its outcome is known as an Experimental Design.
Note: Design of Experiments use to contrasted at six sigma DMAIC process with the OFAT or “one factor at a time approach”
